2019 Zion fall photo workshop - Extensive details

TRAVEL

The most convenient way to get to Zion (where we will be meeting) is to fly into Las Vegas, rent a car and make the three hour drive up to Springdale, UT. Springdale is the town that sits in the mouth of Zion canyon and will be our home base. As we travel to different locations we will do a combination of some people driving with me, and others caravanning behind my vehicle.

ITINERARY

November 1

We will be meeting at 1PM at Zion Adventure Company in Springdale, UT. The address is:

36 Lion Blvd

Springdale, UT

84767

We will meet up, grab a snack or coffee and head into the park to become familiar with the landscape, and make the best out of mid-day light. We will look for scenes with nice backlighting on the Freemont Cottonwood trees that produce a brilliant yellow glow. We will be out shooting through sunset.

November 2

We will arise at meet for sunrise at 6:45 AM.

Once light starts to get bad in the main canyon, the light starts to get great in the narrows! The narrows slot canyon is one of my favorite places to photograph in the fall!

To hike and photograph the narrows comfortably we will want to rent some special dry pants, and dry bags to keep us warm and to protect our camera gear. The will have everything that you would need in order to do this hike comfortably during this time of the year. If you are interested in the different gear items that I would recommend renting take a look here:

http://www.zionadventures.com/zion-narrows/rental-equipment/narrows-rental-packages/

We will be wanting the cool water dry pant package.

They also rent an assortment of different dry bags to keep camera gear dry.

This hike is approximately 5 miles round trip. For information on the narrows as it relates to hiking/photography take a look at this video: https://vimeo.com/117682987

We will return our narrows rental gear, shoot the sunset in Zion and caravan up to Bryce Canyon which is 2 hours away.

November 3

Arise for sunrise and meet at 6AM. We will shoot the hoodoos of Bryce National Park for a couple of hours until the light gets bad, and will continue back towards Zion.

On our way back to Zion we will stop at one of the most magical canyons I've ever been in. We have semi-private access to this canyon. It is well off the beaten track and sees very few visitors. We will only shoot a very small portion of this canyon however in order to stay dry (it can be quite wet and very adventurous). To pursue the full canyon experience it requires a full-day commitment.

From here we will head back to Zion, check in to hotels and meet up again to spend the rest of the day shooting through sunset.

November 4

This is the last day of our trip. We will arise for sunrise and meet at 6:00am. We will go out and shoot for a few hours until the sun gets high in the sky. From here we will head back into town and do some post-production work in Lightroom. Our session could go as late as 2PM, but for those with travel requirements people are free to take off whenever needed.

CLOTHING

Average high temperatures here in Zion are in the mid 60's during November. I find myself in jeans, a t-shirt and a fleece during most of the day during this time of the year.

Mornings feel chilly, so I would recommend a jacket.

Our sunrise in Bryce will be cold, as Bryce is at 8500 feet. The temperatures I would expect to deal with will be around 30 degrees fahrenheit. A hat, jacket and gloves will be appreciated.

For the narrows hike, you will want fleece pants, a fleece top, a hat and a light to medium jacket.
