Friends, this is my absolutely favorite region in Utah! Yes, heavy statement I know. This region of Utah is by far the most alien landscape, of all of the alien landscapes in the state. There are multiple areas that you could convince someone were scenes from the moon, and landscapes that would expect to see on mars. The landscape is vast, dramatic, unique, and inspiring. Due to it’s remoteness, the area does not see the sorts of crowds or visitation that many other landscape photography locations in Utah receive. It is a place to enjoy quiet solitude in your photography experience with endless unique scenes. In addition, the diversity of landscapes within the area that we will cover in the workshop are wildly diverse, so you will walk away with a robust portfolio full of many different sorts of images. For anyone who owns a drone, or who would like to try drone photography, this area is about as good as it gets. While a drone is not necessary, if you own one or are open to renting one, you will be absolutely thrilled with your resulting images from the air. This area is so special, and everyone that I have shared it with has been blown away by its unique character, diversity and aesthetics. I hope that you will come join me on this workshop.

Where are the badlands of Utah?: The Badlands is a nickname for a large chunk of area which sits between Moab, Utah and Capitol Reef National Park. The closest town is Hanksville, Utah. Most people will fly into Grand Junction, Colorado as that is the closest area. If you have the time to spare, it’s a great opportunity to hit some of the National Parks around Moab, Utah since you pretty much drive through that area to get to and from the airport.

What’s included?: Single occupancy lodging, instruction and guiding. Transportation is provided to our shooting locations throughout the workshop from the hotel, however airport pickup transportation and transportation to lodging arrangements are not included. An email goes out to all registered participants to introduce each other. From there, some people may decide to team up to share a vehicle and/or hotels.

What ability level do I need to join this workshop?: This workshop is open to and is appropriate for every level of photographer. Instruction will be specifically catered to each individuals current knowledge base and learning style.

Physical requirements: The vast majority of our areas are shootable from just a very short walk from the vehicle. There are no locations that would require anything more than 1/2 mile hike on easy terrain.

Itinerary: Our itinerary will vary day to day based on weather conditions, but as long conditions are suitable (i.e. not raining), we will be out for most of the day, every day. We will be waking up to get to locations for sunrise and early to mid-morning shooting, we will then take a 2 or 3 hour break mid-day where people can rest up and charge batteries, then we will reconvene for afternoon/sunset/blue hour shooting. In addition, I am trying to arrange a semi-professional dirtbike rider to put on a performance for us to photograph. There is an area dedicated to motorcycle riding, and is known within the diehard riding community as being one of the best “free ride” areas on the planet. For those of you who don’t know, I’m actually an adventure photographer at my roots, and I would love to have the chance to share that piece of life with you, and help you gain access to a discipline in photography that you typically only get to experience if you live within that culture. After sunrise on our last morning, we will go back to the hotel and focus on post-processing in Lightroom for a couple of hours.
